BMW 1 Series used buying guide
Rear-drive handling and premium build, but engine risk is real. A post-2012 diesel with documented oil changes is the smart pick.
Medium riskTypical from ~£7,000
Common issues to watch
- •Pre-2011 N47 four-cylinder diesels have a rear-mounted timing chain that wears and can fail catastrophically — check for cold-start rattle and chain history.
- •N13 petrols and older N43s suffer injector, coil and chain problems, plus oil leaks from the rocker cover, oil-filter housing and sump.
- •DPF and EGR trouble on short-run diesels, and electric water pumps fail on N20 petrols.
What to check before you buy
- Diagnose cold-start chain noise before you buy — walk away if it rattles.
- Look for oil leaks underneath and around the engine bay.
- Ask for DPF/EGR and coolant-pump history on diesels.
Our verdict
Rear-drive handling and premium build, but engine risk is real. A post-2012 diesel with documented oil changes is the smart pick.
